A gas stove rarely stops working overnight. Most problems build up slowly: a flame that looks a little different, a burner that takes longer to light, a knob that feels stiff. Catching these early keeps your stove safe and efficient, and usually means a simple service instead of a repair.
Here are seven signs it’s time to get your gas stove looked at.
1. The flame is yellow or orange instead of blue
A healthy gas flame is mostly blue with a steady shape. A yellow, orange or lazy flame usually means the gas is not burning cleanly. The most common causes are dirty burner ports and a poor air-to-gas mix. Besides wasting gas, an unclean flame produces soot.
2. The flame is uneven around the burner
If some parts of the burner ring have a strong flame and others are weak or not lit at all, the burner ports are probably partly blocked. Spilled milk, oil and food residue are the usual culprits.
3. The burner is slow to light, or the igniter clicks without lighting
On stoves with auto-ignition, repeated clicking without a flame often points to a dirty or misaligned igniter, or a burner that is not seated correctly. Do not keep the knob open and clicking for long while gas escapes. Turn it off and let the area air out before trying again.
4. Black soot on the bottom of your vessels
Soot is a clear sign of incomplete burning. If your pans and pressure cooker keep turning black underneath, the burners need cleaning and the flame needs to be checked.
5. Knobs are stiff, loose or hard to turn
Knobs control the gas valves. A knob that is very stiff, wobbles, or does not hold its position should be checked. Never force a stuck knob or try to open the valve yourself.
6. Popping, whooshing or the flame lifting off the burner
A flame that lifts off the burner, goes out on its own, or makes popping sounds when you turn it on or off needs attention. It can be caused by blocked ports, a misplaced burner cap or a valve problem.
7. A faint smell of gas near the stove
LPG has a strong added smell so that leaks can be noticed. If you smell gas, stop using the stove and follow the safety steps first: don’t operate switches, don’t light a flame, close the cylinder valve if it is safe to reach, open the windows and step outside. Read our guide on what to do if you smell gas.
How often should a gas stove be serviced?
A common rule of thumb is to have a home gas stove serviced about once a year, and sooner if you notice any of the signs above. Stoves in hotels, restaurants and catering kitchens work much harder and need attention more often.
What a gas stove service usually involves
- Cleaning the burners, burner caps and ports
- Checking the flame colour and shape on every burner
- Checking the knobs and how the gas flow responds
- Checking the hose and regulator connection for wear
What not to do yourself
- Don’t use pins or wires to enlarge burner holes. It changes the flame and can damage the burner.
- Don’t open the stove’s valve or gas line parts.
- Never check for a leak with a match or lighter.
